Sushi evening

Sushi evening

A magical sushi evening in a romantic setting – the perfect recipe for a perfect evening. In this write-up, you will find a sushi recipe that you can make for your partner and enjoy a romantic dinner together.

My story: “For my girlfriend’s birthday I decided to prepare a romantic sushi evening. I made sushi, decorated our room in Japanese style (I cut Japanese letters and hung them on the wall), I hung balloons and lit candles. In addition, I put on a suit to create a festive atmosphere. We had a wonderful evening. At the end of the evening, I served a sweet and simple dessert I made myself: I took 2 long glasses, put a scoop of ice-cream at the bottom, on top of that whipped cream and strawberries on top of that (to make whipped cream simply whip ½ a teaspoon of vanilla + 2 spoons of sugar + 1 cup of whipping cream.”

Sushi recipe:

Ingredients:

2 cups of sushi rice

2 cups of water

1 cup of rice vinegar

4½ tablespoons of sugar

½ a tablespoon of salt

Cucumber slices

Slices of raw fish

Preparation of the rice: it is important to use special rice for making sushi (can be bought in almost any supermarket).

Ingredients:

2 cups of sushi rice

2 cups of water

1 cup of rice vinegar

4½ tablespoons of sugar

½ a tablespoon of salt

 Preparation of the rice:

  1. Soak the rice in cold water for 5 minutes.
  2. Sieve the rice and leave it in the sieve for about 10 minutes until it dries.
  3. Place the rice in a pot, add 2 cups of cold water and bring to a boil.
  4. Cook on a low flame with lid on the pot for about 20 minutes.
  5. Turn off the fire and leave the covered pot standing for about 10 minutes.
  6. In the meantime, mix the rice vinegar with the sugar and salt. Continue stirring until the sugar melts completely (you can heat it slightly to help the sugar melt).
  7. Transfer the rice to a wide bowl and sprinkle the vinegar mix over the rice.
  8. Gently mix with a wooden spoon.

** Important: do not place the rice in the fridge; just leave it covered with a towel to prevent it from drying out.

Preparation of the sushi:

  1. Place the dry seaweed sheet on the rolling mat (it’s important to make sure the sheet stays dry).
  2. Wet your hands and grab a ball of rice and start spreading it out on the sheet so you create a thin and even layer of rice. It’s important to leave the top and bottom sides of the sheet without rice (leave a margin of about 1 cm.).
  3. On the rice, on the margin closest to you, place fish slices/cucumber/any other ingredient you want in your sushi.
  4. Roll the sheet together with the rolling mat from the bottom to the top, while continuously compressing the sushi roll. Wet the end of the sheet (the part without rice) with a little bit of water and continue rolling and compressing until you get a roll.
  5. Remove the rolling mat and cut the roll with a sharp knife. It’s important to cut in one long and uniform motion (no sawing motion).
  6. Serve with soy and wasabi sauce.
